Off Ice

This is an essential part of a figure skaters development and is recommended by Skate Canada as a part of the Learn to Train stage of the LTAD (long term athlete development ).

Figure skating requires a unique combination of strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and power. These athletic skills are often best developed off the ice, and they directly support what skaters are learning during their ice sessions.

During our off-ice classes, skaters work on many important elements that help them improve their skating, including:

    •    Strength and conditioning to support stronger stroking and more powerful skating

    •    Jump technique and plyometrics to improve height, rotation, and landing control

    •    Core stability for better balance, posture, and spin positions

    •    Balance and coordination exercises that help with control and alignment on the ice

    •    Flexibility and mobility training to improve extension and skating quality

    •    Injury prevention by strengthening muscles around the hips, knees, and ankles

These physical skills make a real difference and translate directly to on ice skills. Skaters who train off the ice develop the strength and control needed to jump higher, rotate faster, land more securely, and maintain strong technique throughout their programs.

Our club offers off-ice sessions twice per week, and we strongly encourage every skater to attend at least once per week. Even one weekly session can greatly support your skater’s progress and confidence.

Off-ice training is an essential part of modern figure skating development, and it plays a key role in helping skaters safely build the athletic foundation needed for the sport.

We hope you will consider adding at least one off-ice session to your skater’s weekly schedule so they can get the most out of their training.
