Starskate

Skills. Tests. Achievement. Recognition.

That’s what Starskate is all about.

What is Starskate?

Starskate (Skills, Tests, Achievement, and Recognition) offers skaters of all ages the opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating skills in four key areas:

  • Skating Skills
  • Ice Dance
  • Free Skate
  • Artistic Skating

Unique to Canada, Starskate provides a pathway for skaters to learn and grow in either a group or private lesson format, using a progressive, standardized curriculum. Skaters are recognized through badges, awards, and the opportunity to participate in Skate Canada’s nationally standardized testing system.

For those looking to expand their figure skating journey, Starskate can also lead to opportunities in synchronized skating, pairs skating, or even officiating, coaching, or adult participation.

How Does Starskate Work?

Skaters progress through a series of skill levels across the four disciplines. As they advance, they may choose to participate in:

  • Skate Canada test sessions
  • Local and regional competitions
  • Performance opportunities through showcases or ice shows

Skaters can move through the program at their own pace, with no requirement to test or compete—although many find these milestones motivating and rewarding.

What Are My Options as a Starskate Athlete?

  • Once in the Starskate program, skaters can choose from a variety of paths
  • Stay in Starskate and continue developing skills and participating in tests and/or competitions
  • Enter competitions designed specifically for Starskate athletes
  • Transition to the Competitive Skate stream, if interested in a more intensive figure skating path
  • Explore synchronized skating, pairs, or artistic performance
  • Get involved as a coach, evaluator, or judge
  • Skate recreationally or as an adult/varsity member in Skate Canada programs

Competitions for Starskate Athletes

Starskate athletes love the opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive setting—even if they aren’t in the Competitive Skate stream. There are several ways to get involved:

Club Competitions

Local skating clubs often host fun, supportive competitions where members compete in Starskate categories. These may include traditional program events as well as creative activities like:

  • Longest shoot-the-duck
  • Similar pairs
  • Spin/jump challenges

Invitational Competitions

Hosted by Skate Ontario or local clubs, these events bring together Starskate and Competitive Skate athletes from across the region. Categories follow Skate Canada guidelines in terms of program length, age/skill requirements, and scoring.

For more information on upcoming competitions, contact your Club or visit the Skate Ontario website.

Ready to Take the Ice?

Starskate is where passion meets progress. Whether your goal is to master new skills, perform for an audience, or just enjoy the journey—there’s a place for you in Starskate.
